The match begins in searing heat, locked in by the mountains surrounding the football pitch in the town of Budva that our hosts had made their home. We bat first and reluctantly change into our whites. Carmel CC’s openers Ian and Russ face the first overs in Montenegro’s history, but after half an hour we have scored only 20, losing three tired batsmen to the Montenegrin opening bowlers – a trim Yorkshireman and a dreadlocked Aussie. My turn comes. I grab the last set of pads from the team kit-bag, tuck a box down my swimming shorts, and walk to the centre circle.
